Globus File Manager

Globus is non-profit service developed and operated by the University of Chicago. Supported by computing centers all over the world, it's the best way to transfer and share large amounts of research data quickly and reliably between devices, such as computer-to-cluster and cluster-to-cluster, through the use of GridFTP.

The Blugold Center for HPC operates an endpoint with two collections, and is the most preferred way to upload and download large files between your computer and the cluster.

Supported Campuses

All campuses supported by the Blugold Center for HPC are able to link their Globus account to their cluster account. However, logging into Globus.org itself with a campus account is more limited:

  • UW-Eau Claire: Fully Supported
  • UW-La Crosse: Logging into Globus appears supported, but is untested (let us know if you do it)
  • UW-River Falls: Fully Supported
  • UW-Stout: Logging into Globus is currently not available.

Alternative methods for creating a Globus account include using Google, or creating a separate Globus ID.

Interested in using Globus?

All campuses, other than UW-Eau Claire, will need to first reach out to the HPC Team to enable Globus support on their HPC account.

Due to current technical limitations, which we are working on, we have to make a change to your user profile on our side before Globus accepts linking your Globus.org account to your HPC account.

Collections

The Blugold Center for HPC operates its own endpoint on BOSE allowing you to upload, download, and sync your cluster files with your personal or group files. Search for UWEC or BOSE in the file manager to find our collections.

Endpoint Purpose Mount Point

Find Collections

  1. In the file manager, click the "Search" bar near the top of the screen to go to the collection search page
  2. In the "Collection" bar, enter UWEC and select UWEC - BOSE Home Directories
  3. Near the top right of the screen, click the Bookmark button so you can easily return to this collection
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for the collection UWEC - BOSE Group Directories

When connecting to a collection for the first time, you may run into a "data_access" error. This means that your Globus account is currently not set up to allow access to any files in that collection.

Follow the instructions to select an identity and link your Globus account to your HPC account.

Configure Personal Endpoint

If you'd like to transfer files between our cluster and your computer, you'll need to first install the Globus Connect Personal client. At UW-Eau Claire, this is available in the Software Center / Self Service+.

Add local folder button

Selecting Directories:

By default, the personal endpoint only has access to the Documents/Home directory (depending on OS) on the machine it is installed on. If you wish to add more directories for access, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Globus Connect Personal options by right-clicking Globus Connect Personal in your OS's system tray, then clicking options or preferences.
  2. Click the Access tab
  3. Click the + button to the right underneath the accessible folders list.
  4. Select the folder you wish to add, then click choose
