RStudio Server

Overview

RStudio is a popular integrated development environment (IDE) for the R programming language that lets you do all of your R scripting, visualizations, and troubleshooting in a single application. Our version of RStudio is specifically RStudio Server, which allows you to take advantage of our computing resources right in your web browser in the same familiar interface as what you'd run on your own computer.

Changing RStudio Version

If you'd like to update to a more recent version of RStudio, make sure to look at the version of R as well.

As of R 4.6.0, installed packages are tied directly to the version of R you select, which means if you use a different version of R, you'll need to install all of your packages again.

How To Access

Access to RStudio server is done by using the web-based Open OnDemand platform, which lets you access our computing infrastructure using your web brower.

  1. Log into Open OnDemand - https://ondemand.hpc.uwec.edu
  2. Click "RStudio Server" on the dashboard, or by first clicking "Interactive Apps" in the top bar.
  3. Fill out your required resources to the best of your abilities. Unsure what to use?
  4. Choose which version of RStudio + R you want to use.
  5. Wait for the job to start, then click "Launch RStudio Server"

Your session for RStudio will remain operational based on the number of hours you entered in the form. Once the time limit is hit, it'll automatically quit without saving.

Done using RStudio?

To free up resources for other users, we ask that you stop your RStudio instance when you are done using the cluster.

  1. In RStudio, either click "Session --> Quit Session..." in the top nav bar, or click the power icon in the top right of RStudio to close the session.
  2. Then in Open OnDemand, click on "My Interactive Sessions"
  3. Find your running RStudio instance and click "Cancel"
